Raven is a superhero in the DC Comic Universe. She was also a
member of the Sentinels of Magic, which were a group of magical beings who
fought to save the world. She is the daughter of a demon, but her mother was
human. Raven has magical, psychic and telekinetic powers but always has
to keep her emotions in check. If she doesn't, she loses control and converts
into a demonic version of herself. Raven was born to a woman who was raped by
the demon, which draws similarities to Palmer's quote from a Basque witch about
it being unpleasant to have intercourse with the devil. Raven and her mother
never boosted about being related to the demon, unlike the 'witches' from 1200
- 1450 who loved talking about it. I think though, Raven might be like a
repressed woman, like the witches from those ages. She can never talk about her
feelings, is very modest, and just wants to be normal. Sometimes she snaps,
(that's when bad stuff happens), and maybe that's what happened to the women
who were saying they slept with the devil all those years ago. They were sick
of being repressed by higher powers, and so they went and boosted about a
terrible thing, (in the minds of the oppressors) to the priest's faces.
I think a role of a witch today is to give
people empowerment, especially woman. Raven saves the world all the time. Maybe
the witch is a way for people to let off steam, telling about all these great
and unbelievable things the witches can do and how even though they are
powerful, they can still be good. I think the women from long ago were just
trying to let go and be different and tell stories about all these crazy
things. I think that's what Palmer was trying to get at and it made even more
sense when we talked about it in class. They were normal people, then other
people started to fear them and developed witch hunts. Granted, there are still
some people who don't like witches today in the world (like the guy who thinks Beyoncé
is a demon), but most people want to be like Hermione from Harry Potter or like
a superhero like Raven. I like to think the witch is supposed to be a
story of how interesting it is to be different.
