Imelda Marcos and a Thousand Pairs of Shoes

Does money create monsters? I think it can. Imelda Marcos grew up very poor. Her father lost his law practice and she lost her mother at a young age. I think, perhaps, the absence of money at an early age, helped make her greedy later on in life. She met Ferdinand Marcos later on, married him, and became the first lady of the Philippines. Being president and first lady was not enough for them; they started taking money from the people. Imelda stole money from a green revolution she started, some $200 million. She then used that money to buy property in America. They also stole billions of other dollars from the people, furthering the Philippine people into poverty.

In the case of Imelda Marcos, I believe it was a mixture of money related things that made her monstrous.  It started with growing up poor. Then, when her husband came to power, she was wealthy for the first time in her life. But that wasn’t enough. She needed to be at every interesting social event, even international events. She needed to boost the image of her and her husband, and started many projects she could steal from. But that still wasn’t enough. Her and her husband tortured people who stepped into their way. They passed laws to become dictators so no one would oppose them. But she also needed material wealth. She needed properties in many countries, and when she was finally exiled, she left behind 1000 pairs of shoes and 1000 handbags, 15 mink coats, and 500 gowns. And this was what she left behind! There were also rumors that she owned two Claude Monet paintings. These were all items she had that were taken by greed, taken from her own people she was supposed to be helping and serving. Not to mention the cover-ups and torture and whatever else was done to make sure the money and power didn’t cease.

Oh yes, I think greed can definitely create monsters. Once you give into your greed, it’s hard to control it and know where to draw the line. It is probably a reason that it is one of the famous seven deadly sins. Imelda Marcos is one of the most famous greedy people in recent history.

  1. Imelda Marcos is definitely monsters due to her excessive greed. The greed of power and money cannot stop her from stealing money from people in the name of social construction or charity events. She kept hiding her true purpose under the cover of being a successful and thoughtful public server. There are still more examples in the world like her, who is still doing unethical things such as bribery and other stuff. Because of those monstrous governor and politicians, they made me admire more and more the governors who are really helpful to the public and have good control of their greed and desire of power.
